How Listening Transformed The Way We Work

By year two, an important part of the process began to take shape.

We partnered with a Midwestern technical college to better understand the workforce development challenges facing the maritime industry. What started as a defined project quickly became something more and brought clarity to our approach.

Together, we explored the difficulties maritime transportation companies face in building and sustaining a skilled workforce across the Great Lakes.

Through dozens of in-depth interviews, we uncovered more than just data. We gained real insight into the size and scope of the workforce gap. Educators, employers, and industry leaders shared their experiences with technical training shortages, evolving workforce needs, and the opportunity for the college to take a leadership role.

This process revealed a significant shortage of skilled trades professionals in just one community, showing us that the gap was much deeper and more serious than we had expected.

That project reshaped how we approach strategy.

Stakeholder interviewing again proved itself to be more than a research method. It validated a core part of how we build better outcomes. It showed us that listening, done right, is transformative.
